Why Carl Pei’s Latest Justification for Avoiding Foldable Phones is More Sensible

TL;DR Carl Pei, the founder of Nothing, believes that foldable phones alone are not enough to surpass iOS. He recognizes that the company’s limited resources played a role in their decision not to offer foldables at this time. Despite launching the Phone 2, Pei previously criticized foldable phones as a forced innovation. In a recent interview, he stated that foldables are not yet exciting and profitable enough, but may be considered in the future as the technology improves. Pei also believes that foldables will not be the catalyst for Android to surpass iOS or transform Nothing into a major tech company. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of building a solid product foundation and continuing to innovate.

Dhruv Bhutani from Android Authority highlights that although Android is currently the dominant mobile operating system globally, iPhones still hold the majority share of the premium market and the North American market. This is despite the hardware innovations introduced by Android OEMs, including fast charging, advanced camera systems, under-display technology, and foldable phones. While Pei’s initial dismissal of foldable phones may have been deliberate, he may be correct in his assessment that they alone cannot outperform Apple in key areas. However, the foldable category is growing steadily, and improvements in durability and pricing are expected in the future. Therefore, it would be premature to discount the potential of foldables just yet.
