The Jyotirlingas are sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, and there are 12 prominent Jyotirlingas in India. These revered sites hold great significance for Hindu devotees. Recently, actress Raveena Tandon finished her Jyotirlinga Yatra along with her daughter. She started from Kedarnath and ended her journey in Rameswaram. Here is a list of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas.

Somnath Jyotirlinga (Gujarat)

Located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra, Gujarat, Somnath is considered the first and most sacred of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The temple has a rich history and has been a symbol of resilience, having been rebuilt multiple times after destruction.

Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga (Andhra Pradesh)

Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is situated on the Shri Shaila Mountain, on the banks of the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh. Also known as Srisailam, it is revered for the unity of Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati.

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga (Madhya Pradesh)

Located in the city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, Mahakaleshwar is believed to be the only south-facing Jyotirlinga. The temple is located on the banks of the Shipra River and is known for its distinct lingam.

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga (Madhya Pradesh)

Omkareshwar, situated on an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada River, is known for its unique “Om” shape formed by the confluence of the rivers Narmada and Kaveri. The temple is a major pilgrimage site.

Kedarnath Jyotirlinga (Uttarakhand)

Perched in the Himalayas at an altitude of over 11,000 feet, Kedarnath is one of the holiest shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is part of the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage and is accessible only during certain months due to extreme weather conditions.

Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga (Maharashtra)

Situated near Pune in Maharashtra, Bhimashankar is known for its serene location in the Sahyadri range. The temple is associated with the legend of Lord Shiva defeating the demon Bhima. There is a wildlife sanctuary nearby as well.

Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga (Uttar Pradesh)

Kashi Vishwanath, located in Varanasi, is one of the oldest and holiest temples in India. The Jyotirlinga is situated in the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, and Varanasi is considered one of the most sacred cities for Hindus.

Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga (Maharashtra)

Trimbakeshwar is situated in the Nasik district of Maharashtra and is known for its origin of the Godavari River. The temple has unique lingams representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. It is associated with the origins of Godavari river.

Baidyanath Jyotirlinga (Jharkhand)

Also known as Vaijnath or Babadham, the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga is located in Deoghar, Jharkhand. The temple is associated with the mythological story of Ravana offering his heads to Shiva.

Nageshwar Jyotirlinga (Gujarat)

Located in Dwarka island near the coast of Saurashtra in Gujarat, Nageshwar is known for its underground sanctum housing the Jyotirlinga. It is also referred to as the Aar-Gaar (meaning one who is situated in the heart) Jyotirlinga.

Rameshwar Jyotirlinga (Tamil Nadu)

Situated on the island of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, this Jyotirlinga is associated with the legend of Lord Rama. Rameshwar is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites as well.

Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga (Maharashtra)

Grishneshwar, located near Ellora in Maharashtra, is believed to be the last or twelfth Jyotirlinga. The temple is known for its beautiful architecture and intricate carvings.
