Wimbledon 2024: Daniil Medvedev knocks out World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in quarter-final

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner was knocked out of Wimbledon 2024 in a marathon 4-hour quarter-final match against 5th seed Daniil Medvedev. Sinner, who won the French Open coming into the grass-court tournament was outplayed by Medvedev, who looked majestic in the final set of the match. On Tuesday, Medvedev went through a roller-coaster beating Sinner 6-7(9), 6-4, 7-6(7), 2-6, 6-3 at the Centre Court.

The match between the Italian world No. 1 and US Open champion went on for a grinding five sets, lasting exactly four hours. With the win, Medvedev made it to his second successive semi-final of the tournament. Medvedev is yet to make a finals appearance at Wimbledon.

A strange match full of momentum shifts and lulls was absorbing rather than gripping but Medvedev did not care as he triumphed 6-7(7) 6-4 7-6(4) 2-6 6-3 on a covered Centre Court. It snapped Medvedev’s five-match losing sequence to Sinner and avenged his bitter defeat by the Italian in this year’s Australian Open final when he squandered a two-set lead.

Top seed Sinner won the opening set in a tight tiebreak after saving a set point but mistakes began to creep into his game and after losing the second set he needed treatment off the court early in the third after apparently feeling ill. Sinner was forced into simple errors and showed some really poor signs of movement in certain parts of the game.

In fact Medvedev himself called it a strange game in his on-court interview, stating that it felt odd when Sinner moved well in one minute and then failed to play simple shots in the other.

Despite losing the third-set tiebreak, Sinner was rejuvenated in the fourth and sent the match into a decider. Russian Medvedev got the early break though and held firm to win in four hours and set up a clash with either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or American Tommy Paul.

Medvedev came into the quarter-final of Wimbledon 2024 after getting a walkover from 10th seed Grigor Dimitrov. Dimitrov pulled out injured in the first set of his fourth round tie against Daniil Medvedev at Wimbledon on Sunday after a lengthy treatment break. Medvedev, seeded fifth, will now meet top seed Jannick Sinner in the quarter-finals. The Russian has a 6-5 head-to-head lead over the Italian world No.1 but has lost their last five matches.

Dimitrov looked in good form, racing to a 3-0 lead in the match, before Medvedev broke back. The Bulgarian then slipped on Court One, carrying on for a couple of games that Medvedev won before taking a medical time out after the seventh. He returned briefly but could not move well and called it a day after the eighth game during which Medvedev served three aces.
