Xbox Game Pass January 2023: Monster Hunter Rise, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 3 Portable

The lineup of new additions to Xbox Game Pass for January has been revealed, and it’s a rather unusual one. Microsoft has confirmed that only three new titles will be joining the gaming subscription service this month, while six existing entries will be removed from the catalogue. From January 19, players will finally have access to the highly acclaimed Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden on Xbox consoles. These games are ports from Sony’s PlayStation handhelds, the PSP and PS Vita, and are also set to launch on other platforms such as PC, PS4, PS5, and the Nintendo Switch. PC Game Pass members can enjoy these games at no extra cost. Additionally, on January 20, Monster Hunter Rise, the latest addition to Capcom’s fantasy RPG franchise, will be available. Players can embark on a hunt for creatures inspired by Japanese folklore.

In October, developer Atlus confirmed that the Persona games would be arriving on modern platforms. Persona 4 Golden has been available on the Steam marketplace since 2020, and Persona 5 Royal was released last October. It makes sense for publisher SEGA to complete the set with Persona 3 Portable. Despite being numbered as the third installment, Persona 4 Golden is considered a more accessible entry point into the JRPG franchise. It introduces quests and plot elements that offer freedom to the main character, allowing them to plan their days using a weather calendar and engage in various activities outside of battling Shadows in the game’s bizarre dungeon world. Players can join school clubs, attend classes, build relationships with other characters, and even work part-time jobs to earn resources like medkits and revival beads.

Persona 3 Portable shares a similar premise with Persona 4 Golden, following the life of a transfer student who uncovers the truth of the Dark Hour while attending school. Dialogues in the game are presented in a visual novel format, while the combat system retains its turn-based nature. Notably, Persona 3 Portable also introduced the option to play as a female protagonist. These games, along with Persona 5 Royal, will be available on Game Pass from day one. It is also possible to pre-install them and be ready to play as soon as they are released.

While Monster Hunter Rise was initially released on the Switch in 2021 and then on Windows PC the following year, January 20 marks its first appearance on more powerful consoles such as the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. The game will be available for free on the latter two systems for Game Pass subscribers.

As with previous Monster Hunter titles, Rise challenges players to defeat formidable creatures using a variety of weapons and tools. Successful hunts yield resources that can be used to create special armor sets and weapons. The game’s signature gameplay loop is enhanced by new maps that focus on vertical movement. Additionally, there is a multiplayer feature that is accessible to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers through Xbox Live Gold. The cost of Game Pass Ultimate is initially Rs. 50, and then Rs. 499 per month.

In addition to the new additions, Microsoft has also revealed that six titles will be leaving the service soon. On January 16, players will no longer have access to We Happy Few, The Anacrusis, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Nobody Saves the World, Pupperazzi, and Windjammers 2.

As usual, players have the option to purchase these games at a discounted rate of 20 percent before they are removed from the service.
