You can now use Gemini in Google’s new AI note-taking app

New Delhi,UPDATED: Dec 9, 2023 19:00 IST

Google has officially launched its AI note-taking app, NotebookLM, which brings new features and harnesses the power of its Gemini Pro large language model (LLM). NotebookLM is an experimental AI-powered app designed to assist users with taking notes, summarising them, searching for specific information about them, and even creating outlines and suggestions based on the content.

Originally known as Project Tailwind, NotebookLM was first unveiled at Google I/O 2023 and has undergone significant development since. Now, powered by the company’s advanced Gemini Pro, NotebookLM is available for users in the US and for those aged 18 and above. It will soon be rolled out in other countries.

According to the company, Google Notebook LLM offers users a range of powerful features that enhance their note-taking experience. The company describes it as a tool “to help with document understanding and reasoning,” and it introduces more than a dozen new features that allow users to seamlessly transition between reading, note-taking, and writing.

Here are some of the highlighted features of Google’s NotebookLM:

Dedicated noteboard space

Google’s NotebookLM introduces a dedicated noteboard space that allows users to seamlessly take and reference notes. This feature eases the pinning of quotes from chat exchanges, excerpts from sources, and personal notes, creating a centralised hub for organised note-taking.

Citation integration

The platform automatically shares citations from sources when responding to user queries. A significant improvement allows users to navigate seamlessly from a citation to the source, providing context and a comprehensive view of the quoted content.

Save responses with citations

Users can also save responses from NotebookLM as notes, complete with citations.

Suggested actions

NotebookLM also suggests actions based on user activities. For example, when selecting a passage from a source, the platform may propose summarising the text to a new note or assist in understanding technical language, enhancing user experience and productivity.

Tools for note Refinement

While composing notes, NotebookLM offers tools to refine and improve the quality of writing. From polishing prose to refining ideas, the platform assists users in creating well-crafted and impactful notes. Additionally, it suggests related ideas from sources based on the user’s recent writing, fostering creativity and coherence.

Structured document creation

NotebookLM provides new tools to organise curated notes into structured documents. Users can select a set of notes and request the creation of something new, with the platform suggesting different formats such as thematic outlines or study guides. Users can also provide custom instructions in the chat box, allowing for flexibility and personalisation in document creation.

Export to Google Docs

When users are ready to work on the final version of their documents, NotebookLM enables one-click export to Google Docs.

While NotebookLM is now available to select users, Google notes that the platform is an ongoing experiment and will be evolving based on user feedback.
