YouTube has introduced a new feature in its dropdown resolution menu on the web for Premium subscribers. As reported by The Verge, the platform now offers an “enhanced bitrate” option for 1080p playback worldwide. This option appears above the regular 1080p selection, and non-subscribers will be prompted to sign up for Premium if they click on it.
Earlier this year, YouTube began testing its Premium 1080p feature, which improves the quality of the viewing experience by providing more information per pixel. The higher bitrate, a measure of the amount of video data transferred within a specific timeframe, allows for better quality without the need for higher resolution. While 4K is available for select videos, it requires streaming a larger file, which not all connections can handle and may use up a significant portion of data allowances.
Enhanced 1080p was previously rolled out on iOS a few months ago, but now it is accessible to a wider audience. However, YouTube has recently increased the prices for Premium subscriptions, now charging $14 per month and $140 per year. Nevertheless, the subscription removes ads from the viewing experience and offers additional features such as offline viewing and background playback.
