11 Automotive Technologies That Could Change Driving Forever

Currently, the only method of charging an electric vehicle (EV) is through static charging stations. However, an innovative solution is being developed in Sweden by a government transport agency – electrified roads that charge vehicles while they are in motion. While the initial focus is on trucks and commercial vehicles, which require large battery packs to achieve a commercially viable range, passenger cars will also benefit from this network. The researchers behind the project estimate that only a quarter of the country’s roads would need to be electrified to make the system effective, with highways and major traffic routes being the main priority.

A test route has already been selected to be the first stretch of road to be electrified, and construction is expected to begin by 2025. There are currently different charging methods being considered. One proposed system involves an overhead network of cables, similar to the ones used in some European cities for buses and trams. However, this system would not be suitable for passenger EVs. Another method suggests using a charging rail, similar to those seen in certain metro systems. The third option relies on inductive charging to wirelessly charge cars.

The inductive charging system is believed to be the most beneficial for everyday car drivers. According to government data, this system could potentially reduce the size of car batteries by up to 70% in urban areas. However, it is important to note that this technology is still in the development stage.
