2023 NRL News: RLPA Chief Clint Newton Responds to NRL Boss Andrew Abdo’s Allegations of ‘Bullying and Threatening’ Conduct

In response to accusations of bullying and threatening behavior from NRL boss Andrew Abdo, Clint Newton, Chief Executive of the Rugby League Players Association (RLPA), has addressed the issue. The dispute between the RLPA and NRL over a new CBA has escalated, with RLPA members voting to boycott media commitments on NRL, NRLW, and State of Origin game days, regardless of whether their team is playing. This boycott includes pre and post-game interviews with print, radio, and television media, including the Nine Network.

During a media conference, Abdo expressed disappointment in the boycott, stating that it only hurts the fans of the game. He also mentioned that the deal offered by the NRL to the players is considered a landmark. Furthermore, Abdo did not rule out the possibility of imposing monetary fines on players participating in the boycott.

Later on, during an appearance on Fox Sports’ NRL360, Abdo stated that the NRL will not allow themselves to be bullied or threatened by the RLPA. However, Newton, in an interview on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, countered Abdo’s statement, claiming that the NRL is the one engaging in bullying behavior. Newton added that the RLPA will only address the fines imposed on players if they actually occur.

According to Newton, the objective of the RLPA is to reach a resolution through productive discussions rather than engage in threats and intimidation. The boycott means that players will only speak to the media on Monday and Tuesday this week due to State of Origin.

Ricky Stuart, the coach of the Raiders, criticized the RLPA for “using” players and questioned whether the hard stance had the support of the entire player base. Newton responded by stating that the decision was made in consultation with over 50 players representing every club, highlighting that the players’ consent is essential in moving forward.

Newton also refuted claims that the delays and boycotts were intended to secure a pay rise for players, emphasizing that the players have not asked for more money since December. He accused the NRL of making over 100 changes to their original settlement proposal, which he believes was an attempt to complicate matters rather than facilitate negotiations.

The NRL round 19 concludes on Sunday with a match between the Titans and the Dolphins.
