5 things we learned from ONE Fight Night 13: Allazov vs. Grigorian

Chingiz Allazov continues to reign as the champion of the featherweight kickboxing division with an impressive victory over Marat Grigorian. These two elite fighters met for the third time, with their first bout a decade ago resulting in a no-contest and Grigorian winning the rematch. However, this time the champion showcased his striking skills and successfully defended his gold, solidifying his reputation as the best pound-for-pound kickboxer in the world.

2. How can we handle Mikey Musumeci?

Mikey Musumeci continues his undefeated streak in ONE with five consecutive wins. The latest challenger, Jarred Brooks, was unable to stop the American’s momentum and capture the strawweight MMA title. Musumeci, one of the world’s top Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners, constantly posed a threat with his attacks from a closed guard and his ability to change attack angles. Brooks was ultimately forced to tap out to a triangle armbar seven minutes and thirty seconds into the contest. Musumeci’s dominance in the flyweight submission grappling division remains unchanged.

3. Lineker makes a grand return

The past year has been challenging for John Lineker, losing his ONE bantamweight world title and struggling with weight issues. However, his punching power has always been his strong suit, and he showcased it in a thrilling match against Kim Jae Woong. Despite missing weight and competing at a catchweight of 151lbs, Lineker’s powerful punches proved too much for his opponent. With just a few seconds left in the final round, Lineker secured the victory with a huge overhand left and follow-up shots. Lineker hopes to regain his shot at the bantamweight championship, but first, he must overcome his battles with the scales.

4. Is Africa producing another formidable challenger?

Oumar Kane deserves recognition for his performance against Marcus Almeida. Kane was considered the underdog going into the fight, with Almeida being a 17-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion and undefeated in MMA. However, these heavyweights delivered an impressive showdown, and Kane emerged as the surprising victor. Kane’s wrestling abilities kept him out of danger in the first round and allowed him to land effective strikes. Even when the fight went to the ground in the second round, Kane defended well against Almeida’s attacks. His unanimous-decision win and $50k performance bonus have put the rest of the division on notice.

5. Young talents impress on a remarkable night

ONE is fortunate to have some of the best young talents in global combat sports, and this was evident in Bangkok. At just 20 years of age, Ty Ruotolo earned himself a world title shot by defeating the second-ranked lightweight MMA contender, Dagi Arslanaliev, in a submission grappling contest at 180lbs. Ruotolo showcased his command throughout the fight, targeting his opponent’s legs before securing a rear naked choke for the win. He now has a chance at the inaugural ONE Welterweight Submission Grappling World Title in his future. Another impressive performance came from 19-year-old Anna “Supergirl” Jaroonsak, who achieved a unanimous decision victory over Lara “Pizza Power” Fernandez in a 118lbs catchweight kickboxing bout. With a record of 40-6-1 at such a young age, Jaroonsak’s future looks promising.
