8 intimate narratives sharing personal experiences with new abortion legislation: Shots

The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the constitutional right to abortion on June 24, 2022, caused a seismic impact across the country. In the year since, many states have implemented new restrictions and banned abortion altogether. This has forced doctors, hospitals, and lawyers to adapt, but it is individual Americans and their families who have been most affected.

NPR conducted a series entitled Days & Weeks, where they asked people to share how abortion laws in their states have changed their lives. Over 350 people responded, and here are excerpts from their personal accounts:

1. Angel, a health care provider from Ohio, faced a life-changing decision when she discovered she was pregnant. Due to Ohio’s “heartbeat” abortion ban, she only had one day to make the difficult choice. She ultimately decided to undergo an abortion.

2. Jenni Miller, who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, knew that getting pregnant could be dangerous for her health. She had a plan in place to have an abortion if necessary. However, with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, she faced the prospect of carrying a deformed and dying fetus until its last heartbeat. Out of fear and uncertainty, she made the decision to have her fallopian tubes removed.

3. Dani Rios from Texas experienced a heartbreaking situation when her water broke prematurely. Despite the baby’s low chances of survival, she couldn’t legally end the pregnancy under Texas laws. The lack of available abortion providers forced her to endure a traumatic labor and delivery experience, adding further pain to her already devastating loss.

4. Samantha Spontak from Florida found herself in a “mad dash” to make decisions when a potential fetal anomaly was detected. With Florida’s 15-week abortion ban looming, she had to rely on her doctors’ advice and terminate the pregnancy at 14 weeks. She regrets not having more time to gather information and make better plans for her family.

5. Hillary, a healthcare provider from Texas, and her partner made the difficult choice to uproot their lives and move to Massachusetts. Texas’ strict abortion laws left them feeling uncertain about their prospects of starting a family. Massachusetts’ more lenient laws provided them with the opportunity to make the right decision for their future.

The stories shared highlight the diverse and complex challenges faced by individuals due to changing abortion laws. The emotional and practical difficulties encountered by these individuals show the overwhelming impact of these laws on their lives.

These personal accounts have been edited for clarity and length, and they provide valuable insights into the real-life consequences of restrictive abortion legislation.
