Glenda Jackson, a renowned British actress, two-time Oscar winner, and former lawmaker in the British Parliament, passed away today at the age of 87. Her agent, Lionel Larner, confirmed that she died on Thursday at her London home after a brief illness. He also mentioned that she had recently finished filming “The Great Escaper” alongside Michael Caine.

Jackson was a prominent figure in British cinema during the 1960s and 70s. She achieved international recognition by winning two Academy Awards for her exceptional performances in “Women in Love” and “A Touch of Class.” After concluding her acting career, Jackson entered politics and served as a Labour Party lawmaker for 23 years in the Parliament. However, she later returned to acting and delivered remarkable performances, including the title character in Shakespeare’s “King Lear.”

Besides her Oscar wins, Jackson was a distinguished recipient of various prestigious awards in the entertainment industry. She received the BAFTA award and the Triple Crown of Acting, which encompasses two Oscars, three Emmy Awards, and a Tony Award.

In 1971, Jackson earned her first Best Actress Oscar for her outstanding portrayal in “Women in Love.” She secured her second Best Actress Oscar in 1974 for her remarkable performance in “A Touch of Class.” Additionally, she received two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for her work in the miniseries “Elizabeth R” in 1972. In 2020, she won the Best Actress award at the International Emmy Awards for her role in “Elizabeth Is Missing.” Furthermore, Jackson received a Tony Award in 2018 for her lead role in the Broadway production of Edward Albee’s “Three Tall Women.”

In the midst of her successful acting career during the 1970s, Jackson took a hiatus to focus on politics. In 1992, she was elected to the British Parliament and later served as the country’s transport secretary under Tony Blair’s leadership in 1997. Throughout her life, Jackson remained an active advocate for feminism and progressive causes. She was married to actor Roy Hodges in 1958, but they divorced in 1976, and she never remarried. Jackson is survived by her son, Daniel Hodges.
