Fact Check: Origin of video depicting child abuse traced to Central America

An alarming video circulating on social media has captured widespread attention. The 3-minute and 20-second footage depicts a heart-wrenching scene of a child being subjected to horrifying torture by a woman.

In the video, the woman is seen wearing high heels and intentionally stomping on the child, inflicting excruciating pain as the child cries out in agony. She also repeatedly slaps the child and burns their cheeks using a lit cigarette. Shockingly, the woman further engages in abusive behavior by urinating on the child while continuing to slap them. Due to the graphic nature of the video, Alt News will only provide still images.

We have recently received multiple requests via our official app and WhatsApp tipline (+91 7600011160), urging us to verify the authenticity of the aforementioned video. One user has speculated that the video originated in the North Eastern state of Manipur.

Fact Check

To investigate, we conducted a reverse image search using Google Lens on one of the stills from the viral video. This led us to a tweet shared by a Mexican news outlet on May 19, 2023, featuring the same video. Additionally, we came across a Follow Google News
