Following the tremendous success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, speculations had been swirling about the prospects of a Zelda film adaptation. Some went as far as claiming that Universal and Nintendo were on the verge of striking a deal with the creators of Minions.

However, Meledandri has promptly dismissed these rumors, emphasizing that no such agreement is in place.

“I have no idea where that came from,” Meledandri expressed in his interview with The Wrap. “I can understand how people would make assumptions because we’ve had a fantastic collaborative experience.”

“As a member of Nintendo’s board of directors, I understand how these rumors can arise,” he added. “But when it comes to specifics, it’s purely hearsay. It’s merely about the future endeavors between Nintendo and Illumination.”

Although Meledandri hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of a film adaptation, given the triumph of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it’s plausible that the concept is being considered at the moment.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has surpassed $1 billion (£800 million) in global box office revenue, becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time. It also holds the record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a video game-based film, and as of now, it is the highest-grossing film of 2023.

Despite receiving positive responses from audiences, critics were somewhat divided on the film.

In a two-star review, NME stated: “It is faithful enough to entice existing fans to the theaters, but lacks the depth to be analyzed extensively. Is the Mario movie exceptional? To paraphrase one of the title character’s catchphrases, it’s-a mediocre.”
