Stewart’s Grand Exit from Film; Burton on Geordi and #MeToo

Paramount+ announced the end of Star Trek: Picard after its upcoming third season. This news comes as a relief to the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, who felt that the third season of Picard gave them the ending they never got in the 2002 film Nemesis. Sir Patrick Stewart, who played Jean-Luc Picard, expressed his interest in doing a movie that would bring the entire cast together. He believes that taking elements from Season 3 of Picard would make for an extraordinary film. However, there has been no official response to his idea yet. Despite their original final adventure in Stuart Baird’s film, the TNG cast has remained close friends. When Picard premiered, there were partial reunions with Jonathan Frakes (Riker), Marina Sirtis (Troi), and Brent Spiner (Data), who played multiple roles throughout the three seasons. While the final season did not feature Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher) in the cast reunion, the overall sentiment among the cast is that they couldn’t have asked for a better ending. Patrick Stewart initially had reservations about reviving Star Trek, particularly with a reunion of the original cast. However, he credits executive producers and showrunners Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, and Michael Chabon for convincing him to join the project and explore the changes and transformations the characters would have experienced over the past 20 years. One memorable moment for Stewart was seeing LeVar Burton (Geordi La Forge) on set and noticing the intense seriousness in his face. Burton wanted to rehabilitate Geordi’s character arc, particularly addressing a problematic storyline with Dr. Brahms. He wanted Geordi to have healthy relationships and be a family man. The introduction of the LaForge sisters allowed Burton to bring depth to the character and explore the anxieties of parenthood. Overall, the cast is grateful for the opportunity to revisit their beloved characters and give them the proper resolutions they deserve.
