The statement, shared on social media, stated that Ben Simmons and the Brooklyn Nets have notified Basketball Australia that he will not be able to participate in the World Cup due to his ongoing rehab. The statement also mentioned that Simmons requires more time to focus on his recovery and looks forward to representing the Boomers in the future. Basketball legend Andrew Gaze expressed his disappointment but not surprise at Simmons’ withdrawal, acknowledging the challenges he has faced in recent years. Simmons was traded to the Nets from the Philadelphia 76ers in February 2022 after on-court scandals and rumors of strained relationships with teammates. Despite not being part of the original 18-man squad, Boomers coach Brian Goorjian had left open the possibility for Simmons to earn a spot through a selection camp. The Boomers will be competing in Group E against Finland, Germany, and host nation Japan. The tournament will kick off with the Boomers’ first game against Finland on August 25.
