Todd Woodbridge believes that Nick Kyrgios is not adequately prepared for Wimbledon

Australian tennis icon turned commentator Todd Woodbridge believes that Nick Kyrgios may struggle to replicate his impressive performance at Wimbledon this year due to a lack of preparation. In 2022, Kyrgios reached the final, but sadly lost to Novak Djokovic in an enthralling match. Following that defeat, an emotional Kyrgios expressed his determination to finally win a Grand Slam. However, he has since been hampered by a knee injury and has only played in one major tournament, the US Open, where he was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Kyrgios also withdrew from the Australian Open and did not participate in Roland-Garros.

Wimbledon will mark Kyrgios’ first significant competitive appearance this year, aside from exhibition matches. Woodbridge expresses his concern, stating that match fitness could hinder Kyrgios’ performance. Woodbridge recalls Kyrgios’ preparation for Wimbledon last year, which was the best he had ever seen, leading to a successful run to the final. However, with only one match played since October, Kyrgios lacks the necessary playing time and may struggle. Woodbridge believes that grass, which allows for shorter points, may work in Kyrgios’ favor, but he will need to serve exceptionally well.

Woodbridge also expresses concern about Kyrgios’ mental agility in crucial moments, highlighting the importance of confidence and previous match play. He fears that without the necessary match experience, Kyrgios may struggle under pressure. However, Woodbridge remains hopeful that Kyrgios will rise to the occasion. Despite his concerns, Kyrgios has managed to maintain his seed, providing him with an opportunity to progress through the rounds before potentially facing another seed in the third round. The draw indicates that Kyrgios could potentially face Andrey Rublev in the third round and even set up a rematch of last year’s final against Djokovic in the quarter-finals.

Woodbridge speculates that Djokovic would prefer to face Kyrgios later in the tournament, as he recognizes the danger that the Australian poses. This fear factor could add excitement to the tournament. Wimbledon commences on Monday, with Kyrgios scheduled to face David Goffin in the first round. Other Australian players, including Jordan Thompson, Max Purcell, and Aleksander Vukic, will also be in action on the first day.
