Instagram’s Threads Surpasses 100 Million Subscribers Within Five Days of Launch

Instagram’s new social media platform Threads is rapidly approaching 100 million subscribers, as reported by Search Engine Journal. Threads was created to compete with Twitter, which has faced instability since its acquisition by Elon Musk. Musk’s leadership has caused turmoil at Twitter, including indecisiveness on checkmarks, letting go of crucial employees, and placing a limit on daily tweet views.

Musk’s leadership has made Twitter vulnerable

In typical Musk fashion, the daily tweet view cap on Twitter seemed arbitrary and was adjusted on the same day. It’s understandable that Elon Musk has attempted various methods to monetize Twitter, considering the substantial $44 billion investment he made. However, the instability of Musk’s leadership has created concerns for competitors and advertisers, leading to a perception that Twitter is vulnerable.

Curious about how SEJ determined the number of subscribers to Threads? It’s simple. To become a Threads subscriber, an Instagram account is required. Once a Threads account is opened, a temporary badge with the Threads logo and a corresponding subscriber number appears on the Instagram profile. For instance, I became the 58,434,092th subscriber to Threads a few days ago. Based on the count of badges on Instagram profiles, SEJ arrived at the figure of 97 million subscribers.

When the subscriber count reached 70 million, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO and co-founder, commented that the response to the new platform exceeded their expectations. While it’s possible to have subscriptions to both Twitter and Threads, the key indicator will be whether Threads consistently has more posts than Twitter.

Although Threads currently doesn’t support ads, it will likely do so in the future. The question remains whether advertisers who abandoned Twitter after Musk’s takeover will allocate some of their marketing budget towards advertising on Threads.

Steps to subscribe to Threads:

To subscribe to Threads, download the app from the relevant app store, such as the App Store for iPhone users or the Play Store for Android users. Login using your existing Instagram account. Noteworthy subscribers already include Apple News, Apple Books, Apple Music, Shazam, Beats by Dre, Wendy’s, and various celebrities, as reported by 9to5Mac.
Interestingly, there’s no official naming convention for posts on Threads. On Twitter, messages are called tweets, but individuals have suggested using the same term for Threads posts. However, “thread” already refers to a series of posts by a single subscriber on a social media platform. Another suggestion was to name them “Zucks” in reference to Mark Zuckerberg, but he generally does not enjoy wide popularity.

If you have any suggestions for naming Threads’ posts, let us know in the comments section below. Remember that deleting your Threads account will also delete your linked Instagram account, so be cautious.
