Nick Kyrgios has once again hinted at his retirement plans, stating that he will not be playing tennis in five years’ time. This is not the first instance of Kyrgios discussing retiring early, as he previously mentioned that he would call it quits if he ever wins a grand slam title. Speaking at the Ultimate Tennis Show in Los Angeles, the Australian player jokingly attributed his potential early retirement to “all the drinking and partying.”

When asked if he would consider having an extended career like tennis legends Roger Federer (who retired at 41) or Novak Djokovic (currently 36), Kyrgios responded with a resolute “No way!”. He stated that there is no chance of him playing until the age of 33. Asserting his retirement plans, Kyrgios said, “Nah, I promise you, when I’m gone, you’ll never see me again.”

Kyrgios has not participated in any grand slam tournaments this season due to injuries. He withdrew from the Australian Open in January due to a knee injury and missed Wimbledon last month due to a wrist injury. In fact, he has only played one official match this year. Kyrgios humorously mentioned that the schedule has become uncontrollable and jokingly referred to himself as “getting old” at the age of 28, but expressed that his lifestyle of “drinking and partying” makes him feel more like 57.

In June, Kyrgios revealed that he is still dealing with pain from previous injuries, stating that he feels his knee on every point and experiences pain while walking.

Kyrgios came close to retiring following last year’s Wimbledon final against Djokovic. In his first singles grand slam final, he was defeated by the now-23-time grand slam winner with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6. Reflecting on this opportunity, Kyrgios admitted, “That was my chance to win a major. If I had honestly won against Djokovic, I think I would have retired for at least a year or two.”

Interestingly, Kyrgios, who is known for not having a coach, mentioned that he would consider exploring a full-time coaching career for American player Frances Tiafoe after his retirement.
