Fiji name squad, Simon Raiwalui unveils strong group of 33

Former Wallabies assistant coach, Simon Raiwalui, has unveiled a formidable Fiji squad for the Rugby World Cup in France. Leading the team is the talented Semi Radradra, who was one of the standout players in the 2019 World Cup. However, this time he is surrounded by an even more skilled group of players.

Fiji’s increasing depth in talent meant that Raiwalui had to make some tough decisions, leaving out impressive backs such as Seta Tamanivalu, Ben Volavola, and Vilimoni Botitu from his final 33-man squad. These players will be competing against Australia, Wales, Georgia, and Portugal in Pool C.

While Australia and Wales are considered as favorites to progress to the quarter-finals, Fiji poses a significant threat. Their recent impressive performances have propelled them to 10th place in the world rankings. Australia and Wales hold the eighth and ninth positions respectively. Fiji’s victory in the Pacific Nations Cup, where they crushed Japan 35-12 in Tokyo, further cements their status as a force to be reckoned with.

Waisea Nayacalevu has been chosen as the captain of the Fiji team, which will also play warm-up matches against France and England this month.

Simon Raiwalui expressed his excitement about the team’s preparations, saying, “We’ve had an amazing build-up. We got to try different combinations against Tonga, Samoa, and Japan and were able to come away with victories. We have played well in patches and our fitness has significantly improved. However, we still haven’t put together a full 80-minute game. Now we face huge challenges against France and England. We are taking it one challenge at a time, and our next challenge is a very, very strong French team.”

Raiwalui previously served as the Wallabies forwards coach under Michael Cheika during the 2019 World Cup. His experience and expertise will undoubtedly benefit the Fiji squad.

Peni Ravai, the Queensland Reds prop, has been selected to represent Fiji in his third World Cup. Raiwalui commended the effort and dedication of the players, stating, “We have had a good journey for the last five weeks, starting from Taveuni. I couldn’t be prouder of the players and their contributions in all three of our test matches.”
