NRLW 2023 Raiders v Knights

Knights star Jesse Southwell was left seething by a “ridiculous” goal line drop out penalty in their win over the Raiders.

After a slow start to the game, the Knights got themselves on the board courtesy of Georgia Roche.

But the Knights made a meal of the kickoff, and only watched as it bounced over the touchline for a dropout.

Southwell was forced to run and fetch the ball, which had cleared the advertising hoardings and rolled almost to the fence at GIO Stadium, and was stung when the dropout timer expired.

Southwell blew up pointing out she had to go and fetch the ball, and referee Wyatt Raymond pointed out the ball bucket behind the dead ball line.

Only the bucket was apparently empty.

“Are you serious?,” Ruan Sims said in commentary for Nine.

Zahara Temara slotted over the extra two, which gave the Raiders a 12-6 lead.

“That’s so unfair,” Allana Ferguson quipped.

“Of all the controversies to talk about, I didn’t think we’d be having a debate about an empty ball bucket,” Nine caller Mat Thompson said.

“But I am reliably told the ball bucket was empty, so Jesse Southwell had to go and pick up the ball, which took too long, and then the referee gave a penalty because the buzzer went off.”

Ferguson said it was “strange” the referee didn’t listen to Southwell.

“She was lippy – she mouthed off after she got penalised, more than likely saying ‘There’s no footies in the bucket’.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

Fortunately for the defending NRLW premiers, the half time break provided the break they needed and they regrouped to dominate the second half and run out 20-12 winners.
