The International Olympic Committee’s executive board, on Friday, approved the inclusion of cricket sport for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The IOC officials had accepted a proposal by LA organisers for cricket to be included as one of five new sports in the 2028 Olympics, said IOC president Thomas Bach after the second day of an executive board meeting in Mumbai.

Along with cricket, four new sports including baseball/softball, flag football (non-contact American football), squash and lacrosse will also be included in the Olympics going to be held in 2028.
Earlier this week, organisers of the LA 2028 Games expressed their will to add cricket, flag football, lacrosse, squash and baseball-softball to the event.

As per the IOC rules, each host city has the right to request the inclusion of several sports for their edition of the Games.
“These proposals have been accepted as a package by they IOC Executive Board,” IOC President Thomas Bach told a press conference at the end of the executive board meeting.

The next step in the finalisation of the position of these sports in Olympics whould be IOC session, scheduled to start on Sunday. The IOC session would need to rubberstamp the board’s recommendation.
‘Will work with ICC, not with individual cricket authorities of any nation’
While speaking about increasing the popularity of cricket in the world, IOC President Thomas Bach said that the Olympic committee will work with ICC and not with individual cricket authorities of any nation.
“With cooperation from ICC, we will see how can Cricket be made more popular,” he added.
It is worth noting that cricket enjoys a massive appeal in India. The team sport is also witnessing an expanding audience at global level. The sport is set to return after in the event after 128 years. Last time, it was played in Olympics on 1900.
On including Cricket in the 2028 Olympics, We are still in the proposal mode. The number of teams participating is still not clear yet, said IOC President Thomas Bach.
