Rugby news | Eddie Jones cops barrage of boos on coaching return for Barbarians

Former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones may have thought he’d escaped the music on the other side of the world. That wasn’t to be the case.

In his first appearance since parting company with Rugby Australia, fans at Principality Stadium booed the Barbarians co-coach every time his face popped up on the big screen.

Ironically, Jones was in charge of 10 players from the current or former Wallabies squads in an all-comers outfit against Wales.

Despite the different team, the results remained the same for Jones whose Barbarians were beaten 49-26 by Warren Gatland’s men in Cardiff.

Star Wallabies prop Angus Bell enjoyed a barnstorming run to set up a Rob Valetini try while Tom Hooper also scored.

It was a dream farewell for Alun Wyn Jones, who scored a try in his final professional appearance – ironically against the team he once captained.

The match also marked the end of an era for Leigh Halfpenny, who kicked all five of Wales’ goals, as well as Justin Tipuric.

Jones was given man of the match honours – much to the pleasure of the de facto home crowd who gave him a lengthy and rapturous applause, which he soaked in

“I want to thank the crowd, having come here for 18 years and the people who’ve turned out and spend their hard-earned money to watch Wales through the good times and the bad, thank you very much,” said Jones.

“I think the man of the match was a bit of tokenism, so I’ll accept it graciously but I’ve got to mention all of the other players out here today. Hopefully we put on a show.”

Jones’ future beyond his Barbarians cameo is up in the air. Although, there is plenty of speculation that he’ll land a job with Japan.
