Adelaide Crows young gun Izak Rankine targeted in racist attack after Sydney Swans game

Adelaide Crows young gun Izak Rankine has been targeted in a fresh racist attack that the club has condemned as “hurtful and abhorrent”.

The Crows revealed in a statement on Sunday morning, less than 24 hours after their controversial one-point defeat to the Sydney Swans, that Rankine had been racially abused on social media.

“There is no place for racism of any kind in our sport, nor the wider community, and it cannot be tolerated,” the statement read.

Crows chief executive Tim Silvers said the abuse was “totally unacceptable and disgraceful”.

“All of us have a responsibility to call out this type of reprehensible behaviour,” Silvers added.

“Equally, we must also take the time to understand the hurt it causes the person who has been targeted, as well as in this instance all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“From the chairman and board of directors through to our players, coaches, staff and volunteers, we are determined to use our voice and platform to continue to make a stand.

“We are committed to playing a role in educating as many people as we possibly can.”

Adelaide said it had contacted the AFL’s integrity department.

Rankine was also a victim of racist abuse in April.
