Administration takes over operations of the All-female F1 feeder W Series

The groundbreaking racing series, W Series, which aimed to promote female drivers in Formula 1, has been placed into administration. The series provided financial support to female drivers to help break down barriers in motorsport. However, due to financial issues, the 2022 season was cut short, leading to the downfall of the W Series. Despite remaining optimistic about the series’ return, organizers have failed to provide any details about the planned fourth season calendar by mid-2023. Jamie Chadwick emerged as the champion in all three seasons of the W Series. Administrators have been appointed, resulting in the redundancy of all staff except one. Kevin Ley and Henry Shinners of Evelyn Partners LLP, the appointed administrators, have expressed their commitment to exploring all available options to restart the W Series in the future. While the news is undoubtedly disappointing to employees, drivers, and supporters of the championship, the company’s liquidity position prevented it from committing to the 2023 race season. The directors had been in talks with various parties for additional funding and potential sale of the business, but unfortunately, these discussions did not progress. The administrators are now accepting expressions of interest, urging interested parties to register promptly. Launched in 2019 as a support act to the DTM touring car championship, the W Series had to cancel its 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It made a comeback in 2021, featuring in Formula 1 events. Despite receiving criticism for all three seasons being won by Jamie Chadwick, who did not advance to Formula 2 or Formula 3, the W Series played a significant role in keeping Alice Powell, a W Series race winner and Chadwick’s runner-up in 2021, racing again. Powell expressed her disappointment at the news on Twitter but emphasized that the W Series had successfully inspired and created opportunities for its drivers and young female racing fans. The W Series has effectively been replaced by the F1 Academy, which uses a Formula 4 single-seater instead of the regional Formula 3 car used by the W Series, making the transition from karts easier. The F1 Academy has recruited several drivers who were part of the W Series.
