YouTube is set to revolutionize international content creation with the introduction of an innovative AI-powered dubbing tool. The platform’s new tool, announced at VidCon 2023, aims to provide creators with a cost-free and efficient way to translate their videos into different languages, even if they don’t have the resources to hire human translators. Heading this initiative is Amjad Hanif, YouTube’s Vice President of Creator Products, who revealed that the tool will combine the power of the Google-created Aloud with the expertise of the AI team from Area 120, a division known for its development of experimental technologies.
Streamlined Translation Process
According to the official Aloud website, the translation process begins with the AI transcribing the video into a script. Creators can then edit the transcription to correct errors, clarify statements, or highlight text that requires precise timing. Once the revised script is submitted, Aloud automatically translates the video into the desired language. Creators can upload the new audio tracks onto the original video to publish the dubbed content.
Notably, creators don’t need to have any understanding of the languages they are dubbing into, as Aloud handles complex tasks such as translation, timing, and speech synthesis. Creators simply need to review and verify the accuracy of the transcription.
Enhancements in the Pipeline
While an exact release date for the Aloud update is unknown, YouTube is actively exploring ways to expand its capabilities. Currently, Aloud can only translate English content into Spanish or Portuguese, but there are plans to include additional languages such as Hindi and Indonesian, as well as support for various dialects.
In the future, YouTube intends to introduce features such as voice preservation, improved emotion transfer, and even lip reanimation to enhance enunciation. Furthermore, the platform will implement safeguards to ensure that only creators can dub their own content.
According to a Google representative, the Aloud AI is currently being tested with hundreds of YouTube creators, with plans to onboard more over time. Since June 2023, over 10,000 videos have been successfully dubbed in over 70 languages.
To join the early access program, fill out the official Google Docs form. To experience an Aloud dub, watch the channel trailer for the Amoeba Sisters channel on YouTube. Click on the gear icon, go to Audio Track, and select Spanish. The AI-created robotic voice you hear represents the quality of dubbed content that Aloud can generate.
