Alex Chidiac supports Tony Gustavsson’s tactics, dismissing criticism of her role in the Australia Matildas team

Matildas midfielder Alex Chidiac had a tumultuous World Cup debut during the match against Nigeria. Prior to the game, Chidiac was competing for the spot left vacant by the injured Mary Fowler, ultimately losing out to Emily van Egmond. This decision generated a strong reaction on social media, with many claiming that Chidiac had been overlooked once again by coach Tony Gustavsson.

However, in the 84th minute, with Australia trailing 3-1, Gustavsson couldn’t ignore Chidiac’s talent any longer and decided to bring her into the game, replacing Haley Raso. Chidiac described her late entry into the match as a blur, overshadowed by the Matildas’ disappointing 3-2 loss to the Super Falcons. Despite the result, Chidiac expressed pride in making her first World Cup appearance and felt involved in the game, thanks to the support of the crowd.

Chidiac immediately injected energy into the game in the final minutes but was unable to find the back of the net despite a few half chances. When asked if she believed she could have made a greater impact if brought in earlier, Chidiac took a team-first perspective, stating that every player on the bench feels the same way and wants to contribute to the team’s success. She emphasized the importance of following the coach’s game plan and playing to the best of her ability, regardless of her role.

Chidiac also expressed respect for Gustavsson’s decision to start van Egmond ahead of her and acknowledged that it is a team sport. She understands that if her best contribution comes off the bench, she is willing to embrace that role. Looking ahead to the must-win match against Canada, Chidiac has confidence in her teammates’ ability to bounce back from the loss and showcase the Matildas’ resilient spirit.

Despite facing adversity, Chidiac believes that the team can overcome it and has no doubt that they can bounce back against Canada. She recognizes the challenges they have faced, such as injuries, but backs the team to excel.
