Apple releases iOS 17.5 beta update for public, introduces new features and changes for iPhone

There is still more than a month before Apple finally unveils its new iPhone operating system, iOS 18, at WWDC 2024. However, in the lead-up to the new OS, Apple is continuously improving iOS 17 with new feature updates and bug fixes released almost monthly. Last month, Apple released the iOS 17.4 update, and now iOS 17.5 is out for beta testing by developers and public beta users.

The new iOS 17.5 update brings a number of new features and fixes for iPhone users, designed to enhance the iOS experience. With successful beta testing underway, Apple has already released two beta versions of the 17.5 update and is expected to release the final version soon, likely in May. Let’s take a detailed look at everything new in the iOS 17.5 update.

iOS 17.5 features

Web App Distribution in the EU: One significant addition in iOS 17.5 is the introduction of Web Distribution within the European Union. This feature allows users to install applications directly from a developer’s website, streamlining the app installation process. However, developers must adhere to Apple’s guidelines and pay a Core Technology Fee for installations exceeding a certain threshold. This feature is currently in beta, and developer adoption is likely to pick up after the public release of iOS 17.5.

Apple News+: Apple News+ subscribers in North America can now enjoy a new game called “Quartiles.” This word game challenges players to form words from a grid of tiles, adding another layer of engagement to the subscription service. Additionally, iOS 17.5 integrates Game Center into all three Apple News+ games, allowing users to compete for high scores and see leaderboards for daily challenges.

Design changes: The update introduces a few minor design changes. The Podcasts widget now dynamically adapts its colour to match the artwork of the currently playing podcast. The Apple Books app gets a redesigned “Reading Goal” icon in the navigation bar, and the Settings app has a new glyph for the “Passkeys Access for Web Browsers” menu.

Find My Network: According to code discovered by 9to5Mac, iOS 17 seems to bring anti-stalking capabilities for accessories like AirTags. This feature aims to address privacy concerns by enabling users to identify and disable tracking accessories, even those not certified by Apple or Find My. This aligns with Apple’s collaboration with Google to combat unwanted tracking and ensures user safety and privacy.

Mobile Device Management: iOS 17.5 brings updates for MDM (Mobile Device Management) users, allowing enforcement of beta versions during automated device enrollment. This feature enhances management capabilities for organisations deploying iOS devices.

While the current focus of iOS 17.5 seems to be on complying with the Digital Markets Act in the EU, it remains to be seen if Apple has more in store for the final release of iOS 17.5.
