Barcelona Chosen as New Location for Activision Blizzard After Microsoft Acquisition Receives EU Approval

Activision Blizzard has announced its plans to establish a studio in Barcelona, following the approval of Microsoft’s acquisition of the company. This move aligns with its commitment to invest in Europe.

The renowned game developer Infinity Ward, known for creating the popular first-person shooter game Call of Duty, will join Activision Blizzard’s Digital Legends mobile games unit in Barcelona.

This decision comes in response to the British government’s blockage of the Microsoft takeover, leading Activision Blizzard to reconsider its growth plans in the country. However, the company intends to significantly expand its investment and workforce in the European Union, as the deal has received approval there.

Both Microsoft and Activision Blizzard are currently facing antitrust challenges in their pursuit of this historic $69 billion acquisition, which has become the largest ever in the video gaming industry.

Bobby Kotick, the CEO of Activision Blizzard, and Satya Nadella, his Microsoft counterpart, are scheduled to appear in a San Francisco court on Wednesday to advocate for the merger. The Federal Trade Commission is seeking to halt the transaction temporarily, while Microsoft is actively supporting Activision’s appeal against the British veto.

In addition to popular franchises like Candy Crush Saga and World of Warcraft, Activision Blizzard acknowledged the significance of Europe in the gaming industry’s growth. The company believes that with Europe’s abundant skills, ambition, and government support, developers on the continent will continue to drive momentum in gaming, particularly in mobile gaming.
