The intense heat during the summers often lures us into drinking chilled cokes and consuming spicy street food that tastes delicious but is not good for our gut health. The threat of gastrointestinal issues like diarrhoea and vomiting is quite common in summer. In light of the same, we spoke to Dr Apurva Pande, Consultant in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Fortis Hospital Greater Noida. Read on to learn how you can maintain your gut health in the summer.
Stay Hydrated
The scorching summer heat leads to dehydration which weakens our immune system and thus leads to digestive issues. It is advisable to prioritise hydration and consume plenty of fluids throughout summer days. You can drink herbal teas, fruit juices, and smoothies to boost immunity naturally. Also, don’t forget to consume 8 to 10 glasses of water every day to keep your body hydrated.
Consume Probiotics
Consider adding probiotics-rich food like yoghurt to your meals to enhance the balance of beneficial bacteria in your gut. You can also include fermented foods such as idli, and dosa in your diet.
Fibre Rich Food
Incorporating fibre-rich foods into your diet can promote digestive regularity and support gut health. Eating salads with raw vegetables, bran cereals, whole grain breads, and fresh fruits such as figs, bananas and apples is good for your gut health. You can also add lettuce, spinach and lemon to your salad.
Opt For Home Cooked Food
Opting for fresh, home-cooked meals can also contribute to digestive (ayurvedic tips to maintain gut health) well-being. Eating spicy and junk food can throw your gut health for a toss. This is because of the excess oil and spice content in the food. If you lack time then you can try meal planning in advance, so that you don’t have to go for junk food.
