Billy Slater hesitant to announce contract extension with Queensland Maroons despite victory in series

The Maroons’ potential clean sweep has raised questions about Queensland coach Billy Slater’s future with the team. Slater has hinted that he may not return as head coach in 2024 and will make a decision after the State of Origin series concludes. Although he has led the Maroons to two State of Origin series wins since his coaching debut last year, Slater is taking his time in making a decision on his future. The current series win, with a 32-6 victory over the Blues in Game II, has given Slater ample time to deliberate.

“We’ll focus on this year first, and then everything else will take care of itself,” Slater stated, showing his dedication to the present moment. Despite his success, he is not ready to confirm his return for future years. “I’m really enjoying this, but it does take up a lot of time,” he added.

Slater plans to sit down with Ben Ikin and his family to discuss the situation, highlighting the considerable commitment required for the role. However, he points out that his statements do not necessarily mean a definitive “no” to future coaching.

His decision will carry weight for the Maroons, as he has received plenty of support from key players such as Cameron Munster and Reuben Cotter. Munster commended Slater for instilling belief in the team and simplifying their roles, while Cotter praised him as one of the greatest coaches he has ever played under, emphasizing Slater’s focus on competing at the highest level and winning every small moment.

Regardless of Slater’s decision, the Maroons will face New South Wales for the last time in Origin III on July 12. The future of the team looks bright, with or without Slater’s guidance.
