Brisbane Lions CEO, Greg Swann, has dismissed speculations about Danny Daly, the head of football, joining the Gold Coast Suns as Damien Hardwick’s assistant coach. Daly previously worked with Hardwick at Richmond before joining the Lions as an assistant coach and eventually becoming the footy boss. The rumors emerged after AFL journalist Damien Barrett reported on Nine’s Footy Classified that Hardwick had expressed interest in having Daly by his side at the Suns.
Barrett stated, “That is a person in Damien Hardwick’s thoughts strongly. He’s got a track record that people trust him, he worked with Dani Laidley prior to going to Brisbane.” Swann expressed confidence in Daly’s commitment to the Lions but acknowledged that it wouldn’t surprise him if Daly’s name had already been discussed in Gold Coast.
Speaking on SEN, Swann praised Daly as the best in the business and emphasized his instrumental role in the Lions’ success in recent years. Swann confirmed that he had spoken to Daly, and Daly had reaffirmed his loyalty to the Lions.
“He’s a fantastic operator. It wouldn’t be the first time that someone has given him a call to see what he’s up to,” said Swann.
Eddie McGuire, also a part of Footy Classified, expressed his approval of Daly joining Hardwick’s team. “He’s had a long pedigree and is well regarded within the football industry,” McGuire said.
These speculations arise amidst McGuire’s confidence that Hardwick will become the next coach of the Gold Coast Suns, following his departure from Richmond in July due to burnout.
