Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn have confirmed the return of Bruce Horak for Season 2. However, his role in the upcoming season remains a mystery.

When it comes to the major losses in Season 1 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Bruce Horak’s Lt. Hemmer, the Aenar chief engineer, stands out. Lt. Hemmer, who shares a strong bond with Celia Rose Gooding’s Ensign Nyota Uhura, is visually impaired and relies on his heightened senses to perform his duties. In the penultimate episode of the season, titled “All Those Who Wander,” Lt. Hemmer sacrificed himself after discovering he was infected with a Gorn offspring. This parasite, similar to the xenomorphs in the Alien franchise, would have killed him when it matured. Before his demise, Lt. Hemmer took his own life to ensure the safety of the away team by eliminating the Gorn parasite. Now, there are hints that Lt. Hemmer may make a return in some capacity.

A Familiar Face Returns to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

In an interview with HeyUGuys, Anson Mount (Pike) and Rebecca Romijn (Una Chin-Riley) discussed various aspects of the upcoming season. They confirmed the presence of Bruce Horak in Season 2, although his role remains undisclosed. Romijn mentioned that Horak would be returning in a different capacity and speculated that viewers may not recognize him. While the producers had hinted at the possibility of bringing Horak back in some form after Hemmer’s death, it remains to be seen if he will reprise his role as Hemmer or portray a new character.

Commander Pelia, portrayed by Carol Kane, will replace Hemmer as the new chief engineer in Season 2. Pelia, a Lanthanite who previously worked as an instructor at Starfleet Academy, joins the Enterprise following her assistance in containing a potential warp core breach in the Season 2 premiere episode, “The Broken Circle.” You can stream Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on Paramount+ every Thursday.
