After the passing of Gabriel Garcia Marquez in 2014, rumors of an unpublished book by the renowned author began to circulate. Recently, Penguin confirmed the existence of this unseen work titled “En Agosto Nos Vemos” or “We’ll See Each Other in August”. The book is expected to be published within the next 12 months and available for purchase by mid-2024.

The translation of the book from Spanish to English will be done by Anne McLean. Marquez’s children, Rodrigo and Gonzalo García Barcha, expressed their belief that the book deserves to be shared with the world.

In a statement, they said, “Until August was the result of our father’s final effort to continue creating despite the challenges he faced. Upon rereading the manuscript, we discovered its many enjoyable qualities and found nothing that would prevent us from appreciating the remarkable aspects of Gabo’s work: his imaginative storytelling, poetic language, and deep understanding of human nature, particularly in matters of love, which is a recurring theme in his writings.”

According to a report by The Guardian, the book tells the story of Ana Magdalena Bach, a middle-aged woman who embarks on an erotic affair during a visit to a tropical island to honor her mother’s memory. Jaime Abello, director of the Gabo Foundation, revealed that the children initially did not plan to publish the book but changed their minds after reading the manuscript.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, known affectionately as Gabo, holds the title of the most translated Spanish language author in the world. His influence on literature is evident, with authors like Salman Rushdie citing him as an inspiration. One of Marquez’s most famous works, “100 Years of Solitude,” is considered one of the most influential novels of all time.
