Continuing Boycotts Prompt Reddit CEO to Draw Comparison Between Moderators and “Gentry”

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has acknowledged the ongoing Reddit blackout, which has caused some trouble, but he remains firm on the site’s controversial pricing changes.

This week, several of Reddit’s largest subreddits, including r/PS5, r/Terraria, /rEscapeFromTarkov, and r/Gaming, went into private mode as part of an organized blackout.

This blackout is in response to a proposed increase in pricing for Reddit’s Application Programming Interface (API), which is crucial for third-party mobile apps, custom extensions, and moderation tools.

The price hikes are not set to take effect until July 1, but they have already led to the closure of Reddit’s two largest third-party apps, Reddit Is Fun and Apollo.

In a recent interview with NPR, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman dismissed the protests as coming from a small upset group. He also acknowledged that migrating third-party users to Reddit’s official app would significantly benefit the company’s profits.

The CEO also acknowledged that everyday users are being more affected by the blackout than the company itself. Despite this, 20% of Reddit’s largest subreddits are still in private mode, days after the 48-hour protest was set to end on June 14.

Furthermore, Adweek has reported that advertisers are pausing Reddit-based ad campaigns during the protest, resulting in slightly lower impression delivery and slightly higher costs for engagement.

Speaking to NBC, Huffman suggested that the protests do not represent the will of Reddit’s users and compared the site’s volunteer moderators to “landed gentry” who should be more accountable to their constituents.

In response to Huffman’s interviews, Reddit moderators participating in the blackout have criticized the company’s poor communication. They continue to ask Reddit to pause these changes and find a balanced path forward that benefits the widest range of users.

Currently, Reddit has not announced any changes that would allow Apollo or Reddit Is Fun to remain open.

In other gaming news, Riot Games has confirmed the launch of Team Deathmatch in Valorant this month.
