Archaeologists in Germany have made an incredible discovery – a bronze sword from over 3,000 years ago that is in such a remarkable state of preservation that it “almost still shines”.

The sword, which is believed to date back to the end of the 14th century B.C., was found in Noerdlingen, a town located between Nuremberg and Stuttgart in southern Germany, during recent excavations carried out by Bavaria’s state office for the preservation of historical monuments.

According to the office, the sword has a bronze octagonal hilt and was found in a grave alongside three individuals – a man, a woman, and a boy – who were buried one after the other. Bronze objects were also discovered in the grave. However, it is unclear at this point whether these individuals were related.

Mathias Pfeil, the head of the office, emphasized the significance of the find, stating, “The sword and the burial still need to be examined in detail by our archaeologists, but we can already say that the extent of preservation is extraordinary. Discoveries like this are extremely rare.”

The office further explained that while swords from this time period are uncommon, they have been found in burial mounds that were opened in the 19th century or as individual artifacts.
