England extends offer to Ricky Ponting for coaching role in 2023, before considering Brendon McCullum

Brendon McCullum was not the first choice for England’s Test team head coach. Surprisingly, it was revealed by Ricky Ponting that he had been offered the job by Rob Key, the director of men’s cricket at the English Cricket Board. This revelation comes at a time when England has shown a renewed passion for the game under McCullum’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ style of play.

However, had Ponting accepted the offer, the aggressive approach might not have come to fruition. Ponting, being a family man, prioritized his family and declined the opportunity. He does not regret his decision, especially after seeing the travel demands on McCullum and his family. Ponting stated, “Having traveled as much as I have, with young kids now, I just don’t want to be away as much as I was.”

Although Ponting turned down the role, he is no stranger to coaching. He has been leading the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League since 2018 and served as the interim coach of the Australian team in 2017 and 2018. For now, it seems that the door to England coaching is closed while McCullum navigates his way through his first Ashes as head coach.

Since McCullum took charge and appointed Ben Stokes as the Test captain, England’s average runs per over has significantly increased from 2.9 to 4.6. The ‘Bazball’ style of play has brought about a positive change for the Test team, although it has also proven to be risky at times. Stokes’ tendency to declare with wickets in hand, sometimes prematurely, cost England in the opening Ashes match.

Australia emerged victorious in the first Test at Edgbaston after England declared at 8/393 in the first innings. Australia was then given the opportunity to bat on a flat wicket and fell just short of England’s total, being all out for 386. England was subsequently bowled out for 273, and Australia successfully chased down 281 to win the match, with captain Pat Cummins contributing 44 runs. The Ashes continue with the second Test at Lords on June 28.

In conclusion, the decision to appoint McCullum as England’s Test team head coach over Ponting was revealed by Ponting himself. Ponting declined the offer due to family commitments and a desire to be more present in his children’s lives. McCullum’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ style of play has brought about positive changes for the team, although it can be risky at times. Australia emerged victorious in the first Ashes Test, and the series continues with the second Test at Lords.
