Joao Cancelo has been on the move away from Manchester City in the two previous transfer windows.
After completing the second half of City’s Treble-winning season on loan at Bayern Munich, the full-back spent the entire previous campaign with Barcelona on another temporary deal.
With Cancelo saying back in March that he would like to return to the Spanish club for next season, some behind-the-scenes details have come to light regarding Barcelona’s current stance on how important they feel landing another deal for the City man is.
Fabrizio Romano says Barcelona are prioritising Nico Williams move over Joao Cancelo
Appearing in a recent edition of The Debrief, Fabrizio Romano had this to say on the matter.
He said: “I can guarantee that Barcelona’s efforts are entirely on Nico Williams. At least this week, next week we could see.
“Despite the appreciation of Merino, Joao Cancelo, many options, they want to use all their budget and all of their resources on Nico Williams.
“This week the mission is to reach the agreement on personal terms with Nico Williams and to have the greenlight of the player.”
City need to find another solution for Cancelo
During his time with Barcelona last season, the 30-year-old appeared in 42 games across La Liga and the Champions League, scoring four goals and delivering five assists in the process.
Having played a key role in their previous season and earned himself the fifth-highest overall season rating in the squad based on his La Liga performances according to WhoScored, it’s understandable why Barcelona would want to bring Cancelo back to the club this summer.
However, if this potential move depends on getting a deal for Williams done first, then City and Cancelo may just have to be patient before being able to discuss another solution before the summer transfer window closes.
