With the release of the Wear OS 3 update, Google removed the Google Assistant feature from all smartwatches except for the Pixel Watch and the latest Samsung Galaxy Watch models. Unfortunately, this meant that Fossil Gen 6 owners lost access to the virtual digital assistant. However, according to a report from Android Police, Google is addressing this issue by rolling out an update that will restore Google Assistant functionality to all Fossil Gen 6 devices running Wear OS 3. The update can be downloaded from the Fossil Smartwatches app on the Google Play Store. To install the app on your Android phone, simply visit this link. Since Fossil is the developer of the app, there should be no concerns about its legitimacy.
It’s important to note that in order to have Google Assistant on your Gen 6 watch, it must be paired with an Android phone. If you have paired your Gen 6 watch with an iPhone or an Android Go device, you won’t be able to use the virtual digital assistant. In addition to Fossil Gen 6 watches, Skagen Gen 6 watches are also receiving the update to bring back Google Assistant support.

For Fossil Gen 6 users, this update presents a tough choice. Since these devices also support Amazon’s digital assistant, Alexa, users will need to decide between Google Assistant and Alexa. By opening the Fossil Smartwatches app on their Android phone and going to “My Preferences” > “Default assistant option”, users can choose Google Assistant as their preferred assistant. They can then activate the assistant by saying “Hey Google,” long-pressing the upper button, or using a complication on their watch face.

This update from Google marks a positive step towards rectifying some past decisions, including the exclusion of Assistant from Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 5.
