France ends Morocco’s dream run to advance to quarter finals

Eugenie Le Sommer showcased her scoring prowess by netting twice, leading France to a 4-0 victory over Morocco and securing a spot in the FIFA Women’s World Cup quarter finals. The win sets up a highly anticipated match against co-host Australia in Brisbane on Saturday for a chance to advance to the semi finals. France took control of the game with three quick goals in just nine minutes, courtesy of Kadidiatou Diani, Kenza Dali, and Le Sommer. The match, held at Adelaide’s Hindmarsh Stadium, saw Le Sommer score again in the 70th minute to seal the victory and end Morocco’s campaign.

Morocco, making their tournament debut, made history as the first Arab nation to reach the knockout stage. They achieved this feat by defeating South Korea in the group stage and upsetting group winner Colombia. However, their impressive run came to an end against France, one of the favorites in the tournament.

Diani opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a header from Sakina Karchaoui’s cross. Dali added to the tally just five minutes later with a well-placed shot. Le Sommer then capitalized on a defensive mistake to extend France’s lead to 3-0. Le Sommer completed her brace by heading in a cross from Vicki Becho in the 70th minute.

Australia, the next opponent for France, secured their spot in the quarter finals by defeating Denmark 2-0. Superstar striker Sam Kerr made a return from injury and played as a substitute in the second half.
