Google’s Pixel Tablet sets a solid foundation; Android must step up its game

Google’s re-entry into the tablet market comes in the form of the Pixel Tablet, a device that aims to compete with style. With its 10.95-inch display and the powerful Tensor G2 chip, also found in the Pixel 7 series phones, the tablet certainly captures attention. But its standout feature is the charging dock/speaker combo that transforms it into a smart display when not in use. MobileSyrup’s senior reporter, Dean Daley, and news editor, Jon Lamont, took the Pixel Tablet for a spin to assess its performance as both a tablet and a smart display.

Dean Daley, in his review, mentions that while he has extensively used the Pixel Tablet as a replacement for a Nest Hub or Nest Mini in his room, he hasn’t quite utilized it as a tablet. He finds the tablet’s 10.95-inch IPS LCD screen to be too large and bulky for his liking, preferring to leave it on the dock for watching content occasionally. He does appreciate the device’s volume rocker and its ability to provide booming sound when docked. Dean mainly uses the Pixel Tablet as a primary device for listening to music in his room, but he did encounter some minor bugs such as freezing and issues with the dock.

On the other hand, Jon Lamont finds that the Pixel Tablet serves as a suitable replacement for his Google Nest Hub Max in the kitchen. He mentions that the ability to detach the screen and use it as a tablet was something he desired with the Nest Hub Max, which the Pixel Tablet fulfills. However, he points out that a device trying to serve multiple roles is not exceptional at any of them. While he found the tablet experience to be just fine, he highlights the lack of compelling reasons to use it in that mode. The limited selection of large screen-friendly Android apps and stretched smartphone apps detract from the overall experience. Jon also mentions issues with speaker placement and the need for a costly kickstand case when using the tablet without the dock. Despite these drawbacks, he concludes that the Pixel Tablet works well as a smart display when docked and offers familiar features found in Google’s Nest Hubs.

In summary, the Pixel Tablet presents an intriguing proposition with its large display, powerful chip, and the ability to transform into a smart display. However, there are some concerns regarding its size and usability as a tablet, as well as issues with speaker placement and accessories. Nevertheless, for those who desire a larger tablet and a smart display in one device, the Pixel Tablet may provide an ideal solution.
