IND vs ENG: What will happen if Semi-Final 2 of T20 World Cup gets washed out?

New Delhi,UPDATED: Jun 26, 2024 19:46 IST

Team India will continue their marvellous run in the T20 World Cup 2024 as they take on England in the second semi-final on Thursday, June 27 at Providence Stadium, Guyana. The match promises to be a highly anticipated game with two of the best white-ball teams going against each other.

However, ahead of the fixture, there are literal dark clouds hovering over the game with heavy rains predicted during the course of the match. According to weather.com, there are high chances of rain during the fixture, around 60% during the match day. The game will begin at 10:30 am local time (8:00 PM IST) and rain chances go up to 58% at 12 pm in Guyana ensuring a stoppage in the play.

The prediction continues to remain unfavourable until 3:00 PM local time further diminishing the chances of a complete fixture. To facilitate the completion of the match, the ICC (International Cricket Council) has allotted a total of 250 minutes of additional time for both the semi-finals. Hence, the ground staff will have enough time to make the ground ready for the contest if the weather allows.

Who will qualify if the game gets washed out?

However, in case the game gets washed out, the team finishing higher in their Super 8 group will qualify for the final, according to clause 16.10.7 of the ICC’s playing conditions for the T20 World Cup 2024. Hence, India are set to advance to the final if the game gets washed out as they topped Super 8 Group 1 by winning all of their matches.

On the other hand, England finished on the second spot with two wins out of three games. However, fans would hope for a complete 40-over game between the two heavyweight white-ball teams of modern-day cricket.

“If a Semi-Final is tied, the teams shall compete in a Super Over to determine which team progresses to the Final. Refer to clause 16.3.1.2 and Appendix F. If following a tie, weather conditions prevent the Super Over from being completed, or if the match is abandoned or a no result, then the team that finished first in its Second Round Group will progress to the Final,” states the ICC’s Playing conditions for the tournament.
