India vs England Jasprit Bumrah reprimanded for inappropriate physical contact with Ollie Pope in Hyderabad Test

Following India’s loss in the first Test against England, pacer Jasprit Bumrah has now been handed an official reprimand by the ICC for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the match in Hyderabad.

The specific violation by Bumrah pertained to Article 2.12, which addresses “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match.”

When did the incident Bumrah and Pope happen in the first Test?

The incident unfolded in the latter stages of England’s second innings, specifically the 81st over, when Bumrah impeded England batter Ollie Pope’s path while running between the wickets, resulting in an avoidable collision.

Bumrah had picked up four wickets in the second innings and would dismiss Pope in the end. The England batter had scored a record-breaking 196, which played a big role in their win in the end.

What does the violation of Article 2.12 mean?

According to the ICC’s Code of Conduct for Players and Support Personnel, the violation of Article 2.12 means:

“Any form of inappropriate physical contact is prohibited in cricket. Without limitation, Players will breach this regulation if they deliberately, recklessly and/or negligently walk or run into or shoulder another Player or Umpire. When assessing the seriousness of the breach, the following factors (without limitation) shall be taken into account: (i) the context of the particular situation, including, without limitation, whether the contact was deliberate (i.e. intentional), reckless, negligent, and/or avoidable; (ii) the force of the contact; (iii) any resulting injury to the person with whom contact was made; and (iv) the person with whom contact was made.”

The charge against Bumrah was brought forth by the on-field officiating duo, Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, alongside third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth official Rohan Pandit. As this was Bumrah’s initial transgression within a two-year period, he received an official reprimand and one demerit point was added to his record.

The Indian pacer would admit to the offence and accepted the sanction that was proposed by Richie Richardson of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees and there was no need for a formal hearing into the matter.
