Professor Nanjaiah Srinanjayya’s Room: A Reflection of Rural Antiquity

Professor Nanjaiah Srinanjayya is a passionate teacher of Folklore at Mysore University. A recent news report by News18 Kannada Digital showcases his deep love for the subject. Srinanjayya has curated an extraordinary collection of items related to rural areas in his room at the Kannada Studies Center, Mysore University.

His collection includes rare items such as an earthen pot, a copper Bindige pot, beaker scales (seru, pavu, and chataku in Kannada), and an earthen lamp. These artifacts offer a glimpse into the history of the village, turning Srinanjayya’s room into a museum-like space. He takes great pleasure in sharing information about these antiques with his guests.

In addition to these items, the professor has acquired musical instruments like the Ḍamaruga (a two-headed drum in Hindi) and the Dollu (a double-headed percussion instrument native to Karnataka). The Dollu creates a thunderous sound when struck. Srinanjayya’s collection also includes a sickle, stones used for grinding millets, bullock cart wheels, and wooden cradles. He has even preserved traditional tools like the onake (pestle), fibre sack bag, and an instrument for churning buttermilk.

The professor’s room also displays paintings and photographs, including one of Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. The walls adorn masks that may be associated with local festivals. Unfortunately, information about the masks and the festivals they are worn in is currently unavailable. Srinanjayya takes great care to ensure the cleanliness of his room dedicated to preserving folklore arts.

Srinanjayya hails from the Chamarajanagar district in the southernmost part of Karnataka. Formerly known as Arikutara, this district shares borders with Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Visitors admire how he dedicates a significant amount of time to his passion alongside his profession.
