iPhone 17 Plus leaks are here, the 2025 iPhone could come with a smaller screen size

Though it might seem early for discussions about the iPhone 17, the buzz around its expected features and specifications is already in full swing. Despite being several months away from the release of the iPhone 16, the focus is already on its successor. Until now, we have heard several reports about the iPhone 17 Pro, including the possibility of high refresh-rate displays, always-On functionality, and a 2nm chipset. And now, rumours about the iPhone 17 Plus are circulating, and it is being said that the 2025 iPhone might come with a smaller screen size.

The iPhone 17 Plus, rumoured to follow the launch of the iPhone 16 series in late 2024, appears to deviate from the path of consistently increasing screen sizes. Historically, Apple has maintained a pattern where the Plus models mirrored the display dimensions of the higher-end Pro Max” versions. For instance, both the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 15 Plus boasted a 6.7-inch screen, matching the size of their respective Pro Max counterparts.

By adjusting the screen sizes across its range, Apple could be aiming to more clearly differentiate its models. This helps in targeting specific user groups who might prefer a mid-sized device that balances functionality and comfort. A smaller display might lead to a reduction in production costs, potentially allowing Apple to price the iPhone 17 Plus more competitively. This could attract buyers who are looking for premium features without the top-tier price. In addition to this, a slightly smaller device could appeal to users who find larger phones cumbersome. This change might enhance the in-hand feel of the phone, making it more appealing to a segment of consumers who prioritise ease of use and handling over screen size.

Talking about earlier rumours about the iPhone 17 series, a report by DigiTimes had said that Apple’s primary chip supplier Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) announced that it will start building 2nm processors by the end of this year. Furthermore, the processors are expected to be produced in large quantities in 2025. After this announcement by TSMC, reports started surfacing that said that the iPhone 17 Pro could be amongst the first few devices to be powered by these processors.

Earlier, a report from South Korean publication The Elec had said that Apple is gearing up to introduce high refresh-rate displays and the Always-On feature to the vanilla iPhone 17 in 2025. If that happens, it will be the first time that the base variant of the iPhone has been upgraded. Usually, a high refresh rate and Always On feature is only available in Pro models of the iPhone.

As always, it’s wise to take early rumours with caution, as Apple hasn’t even announced the iPhone 17 yet.
