Italian EV charging business acquired by BorgWarner

BorgWarner’s recent acquisition is set to enhance its production capabilities in the development of on-board chargers, specifically 400V and 800V models that are compatible with different regional electric grid variations. Additionally, the deal brings innovative high-frequency DC/DC converter technology to BorgWarner’s offerings. On-board chargers play a crucial role in converting AC power from sources like home plug outlets into DC power to effectively charge electric vehicle (EV) battery packs.

Projections indicate that the acquisition target will generate approximately $27 million in revenue within the current year. BorgWarner has ambitious plans to expand sales to $273 million by 2027.

BorgWarner CEO, Frédéric Lissalde, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating that Eldor’s technologies greatly complement BorgWarner’s ePropulsion portfolio, especially in terms of expanding into high-voltage power electronics beyond the conventional inverter.

The completion of the deal is set to take place later this year, pending the fulfillment of closing conditions.

As BorgWarner continues to grow its e-product portfolio, the company is also pursuing the spinoff of its fuel parts and aftermarket business, which will be renamed Phinia and is expected to be finalized on July 3. This strategic move aligns with BorgWarner’s long-term goals.

Eldor’s electric hybrid systems segment currently comprises around 300 employees, including 100 engineers, spread across two research and development plants in Italy and a manufacturing facility in Turkey. Over the past five years, the company has invested close to $140 million in research and development activities.

Eldor President, Pasquale Forte, emphasized that joining forces with BorgWarner provides the Eldor EHS team with unparalleled opportunities for professional and managerial growth on a global scale.
