The Uncertain Future of E3 Revealed by ESA
As the summer showcases come to an end, it’s clear that E3’s return is still up in the air. A recent source suggests that E3’s comeback is very uncertain.
According to a report on ResetEra, the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board discussed tourism for the city in a regular meeting. One of the presentation slides mentioned “E3 cancellations for 2024 & 2025.”
Although prospective dates for E3 2024 and 2025 were speculated in a previous report, no concrete dates or plans were announced. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz earlier this year, ESA president and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis stated that the company was committed to providing a platform for the industry but had no news to share at that time.
An ESA spokesperson told Axios’ Stephen Totilo that the fate of E3 2024 is still uncertain. The spokesperson stated, “ESA is currently in conversation with ESA members and other stakeholders about E3 2024 (and beyond), and no final decisions about the events have been made at this time.”
E3’s Path Forward
The cancellation of E3 2023 was significant. The Entertainment Software Association had partnered with PAX organizer ReedPop to revive the show after several years without it. However, E3 failed to regain its momentum amidst the return of other in-person events following the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement, ReedPop Global VP of Gaming Kyle Marsden-Kish attributed the decision to the lack of playable demos from companies and resource challenges. He also mentioned that the ESA and ReedPop planned to collaborate on future E3 events.
Today’s news indicates that if E3 does return, it is unlikely to be held in Los Angeles. Nevertheless, alternatives such as Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest and the various streaming showcases have successfully paved the way for a new standard in summer gaming news extravaganzas.
