When discussing the issue of transgender athletes in competitive sports, it’s not often that Lance Armstrong and Caitlyn Jenner come to mind as the ideal spokespeople. However, the unlikely pair is teaming up to address the matter for The Forward. Generally, we wouldn’t pay attention to right-wing content involving disgraced celebrities offering opinions on topics far beyond their expertise, akin to Gene Simmons of KISS making geopolitical observations. But Armstrong’s tweets sparked our interest when he raised the issue of “fairness” in sports. Is this some kind of joke?
“Is there not a world where we can support the transgender community, question the fairness of transgender athletes in sports, and not be labeled as transphobic or bigoted?” Armstrong tweeted, promoting their project with Jenner. “Do we have the answers? And do we even want to know the answers?” It’s astonishing to witness such a lack of self-awareness and humility displayed publicly.
