Lionsgate Begins Early Development of John Wick 5, Plans to Release AAA Video Game Associated with the Franchise

Lionsgate, the production studio behind the John Wick franchise, has confirmed that John Wick 5 is currently in the early stages of development. This announcement came during the Q4 2023 earnings call, as Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake discussed plans for expanding the hitman universe. Director Chad Stahelski has expressed his interest in working on a fifth movie and has hinted that the introduction of the new villain, Marquis de Gramont (played by Bill Skarsgård), will serve as a reset for the John Wick storyline.

Drake stated, “We’re not only focusing on AAA video games, but also exploring spin-offs and television series to expand the franchise. We want to create a steady flow of content that caters to the audience’s demand.” Collider reported these comments from the earnings call. The first spin-off, titled Ballerina and led by Ana de Armas, will follow the story of Rooney, a ballerina-assassin seeking revenge for her family’s murder. Ballerina is set to release on June 7, 2024, and will continue the narrative established in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Unity Phelan originally portrayed Rooney in the stage performance, but de Armas will now take on the role.

Another exciting project in the works is The Continental miniseries, which will serve as an origin story for Winston Scott (played by Colin Woodell) and his rise to becoming the owner of the prominent hotel that serves as a sanctuary for skilled assassins. This miniseries will exclusively premiere on Peacock sometime in September. Drake added, “We are working on three other projects, including John Wick 5 and various television series. As we continue to expand the world of John Wick, the fifth movie will organically develop from the stories we are telling. Fans can expect a regular stream of John Wick content.”

For those who have seen John Wick: Chapter 4, it is clear that Keanu Reeves’ character’s storyline seemingly reached its conclusion, with him being shot and left bleeding. The film also showed the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) and Winston Scott (Ian McShane) visiting John Wick’s grave. It remains uncertain whether Lionsgate plans to introduce a new John Wick or revive Reeves’ character, as has been done in the past with fictional characters like Batman. However, this continuation opens up the possibility of oversaturating the franchise, potentially diminishing the series’ previous success.

In addition to film and television, Lionsgate is also exploring the gaming potential of the John Wick franchise. While details are currently limited, the idea of creating a AAA video game was first mentioned in late 2022 by Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer. Since then, the studio has been receiving proposals from various game developers. It is worth noting that there has already been a John Wick game called John Wick Hex released in 2020, which offered a strategy-style gameplay experience and delved into the relationship between John Wick and characters like Winston and Charon.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is now available for purchase on various VOD platforms, including YouTube Movies, Google Play, and Apple TV.
