Main character’s untimely demise in Secret Invasion is a shocking revelation

Secret Invasion made its debut on Disney Plus on Wednesday, providing viewers with the opportunity to witness an adventure featuring Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) that could have significant implications for the entire MCU. Some initial reviewers criticized the slower pace of the first two episodes, but there is no need to be alarmed by these early reactions. Based on these opinions, it was not anticipated that there would be any major developments in episode 1 of Secret Invasion, let alone the death of a significant character.

However, death is a prominent theme in the MCU, serving as a signal that the stakes are high and our beloved heroes do not always survive. In a spy story like Secret Invasion, where one side can assume the identity of anyone, death is not surprising.

Before delving deeper into this major MCU death, I must caution you that there are major spoilers ahead, so if you have not yet watched the first episode, it is advisable to stop reading here.

The death of Agent Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) early in the episode did not come as a shock. It was apparent from the beginning that we were being deceived. The Ross we know and love is not present. Instead, he is a Skrull, disguised as Ross, seeking to gather information about human spies and their operations. Marvel later confirmed this by showcasing Ross’s transformation back into his original Skrull form.

This early death foreshadowed that there would be other fight scenes where it would be difficult to determine who to side with. Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) was pursuing fake-Ross, but Talos himself assumed the appearance of a Russian agent.

The Unexpected Demise of Maria Hill

The untimely death of Maria Hill came as a complete surprise. It occurred during the climax of the first episode when the villainous Skrull faction detonated multiple bombs in Moscow. Their intention was to initiate a war between the United States and Russia, a conflict that could escalate to nuclear proportions and result in the annihilation of humanity.

Skrulls are unfazed by radiation, which is why they have taken refuge in former Russian atomic facilities. In the event of a nuclear catastrophe, they would inherit the planet.

As the bombs explode, Fury, Talos, and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) give chase to Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) and G’iah (Emilia Clarke). G’iah is Talos’s daughter, who has just realized that she may have been working for the wrong Skrull faction.

At this moment, Maria approaches Fury, only to be shot point-blank by him. Of course, it is not really Fury. It is Gravik, temporarily assuming Fury’s appearance.

While the death of Maria Hill was shocking, it was handled masterfully by Marvel. It was previously expressed that it would be fascinating if Secret Invasion revealed that Nick Fury is a Skrull by the end of the series. Marvel delivered a twist that partially fulfills this desire. However, it is not exactly what was envisioned. Instead, it was Gravik masquerading as Fury.
