Melodies of Steel 2: A Destructoid Journey

Melodies of Steel 2: A Destructoid Journey

Back to the Little Tail Bronx

It seemed unlikely that there would be a sequel to Fuga: Melodies of Steel, released in 2021. The first game had a conclusive ending and only achieved modest sales. CyberConnect has been struggling to establish the Little Tail Bronx series since Tail Concerto in 1998. But here we are, with Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2, and I couldn’t be happier.

The original Fuga was a well-executed design that made the most of its simple mechanics. So, how do you build upon that? Can you improve upon something that is already polished to perfection? Perhaps not much.

Set one year after the events of the first game, Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2 reunites the children. However, before they can catch up with each other, an ancient evil awakens, a friend is killed, and they are left to chase a new enemy. Despite still piloting the giant Metal Slug-like Taranis, the plot manages to be refreshingly different. I particularly appreciate the improvement in the characters. While they are still children, one year has brought significant changes. They have grown and developed new strengths and insecurities. Characters like Jin and Wappa, who may not have been favorites in the first game, now have the chance to shine. Additionally, two boss characters from the previous game join the Taranis, adding a new dynamic to the story.

However, the narrative still suffers from some of the same issues as the first game. The overarching plot feels stretched to accommodate character development and lacks a focus on significant events. While not terrible, it is not as engaging as the previous story.

That’s a big metal slug

The gameplay in Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2 is more of a remix than a complete overhaul. Each character has been reworked with new skills. They still control the machine gun, grenade launcher, or cannon on the Taranis, but with some differences. For example, the grenade launcher now spreads attacks across different weapons. These changes require new strategies to succeed, adding variety to the experience. The enemies have also been tweaked, with new abilities and tricks up their sleeves.

Powered by a forsaken child

One of the most significant differences in Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2 is the Soul Cannon. In the first game, you could sacrifice a child to unleash devastating power. However, this time, if you find yourself losing a boss battle, the Taranis will randomly select a child to load into the cannon. You then have a limited number of turns to finish the battle before the child is killed. The game introduces the Managarm as an alternative, which injures the child but doesn’t guarantee victory like the Soul Cannon.

Unconventional ammunition

It is recommended to play Fuga: Melodies of Steel before diving into the sequel. While there is a recap available, Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2 functions more as a continuation of the story rather than a standalone entry. Some assets and stages are reused from the first game, leading to a sense of familiarity. While this might disappoint some players, the core gameplay still holds up. However, the asking price of $39.99 may seem high compared to other indie titles in the market.

Old friends

It’s important to note that Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2 is a continuation of the first game. While it offers some fresh experiences, it doesn’t bring anything completely new to the table. If you enjoyed the first game, you’ll likely appreciate the sequel. However, if the first game didn’t resonate with you, this one won’t change your mind. The series is planned as a trilogy, and while I support that decision, I hope to see more evolution and growth in future installments. Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2 is a great game, but it needs to introduce something new to regain its dazzle.
